Tanooki Mario Figure –
The Tanooki Suit is an item appearing in the Mario series. It is not to be confused with the similar power-up, the Super Leaf.
Super Mario Bros. 3 – The Tanooki Suit made its first appearance in Super Mario Bros. 3.
Once the suit is worn, Mario can fly (similarly to the Super Leaf and Cape Feather) and turn into a statue. Turning into a statue will allow him to avoid any enemy, and will also allow him to defeat most enemies.
Super Mario 3D Land – While the item form doesn’t reappear in Super Mario 3D Land, the effects of the Super Leaf can be obtained to make Mario in a Tanooki Suit. Mario can do everything the same, except for flying, due to being complex to fly in a 3D platformer and turn into a statue.
A new power-up, the Statue Leaf, also grants Mario an advanced Tanooki Suit which does allow Mario to become a statue. Tanooki Mario Figure. Legend of Zelda Plush Toy.
Origin – The suit is based on the tanuki, a Raccoon Dog native to Japan which is featured heavily in Japanese mythology. The statue has the general appearance of Jizō, with Mario’s mustache.
The Tanooki Suit is a fairly uncommon item found in Super Mario Bros. 3 and its subsequent remakes. It is based on tanukis, Japanese creatures who, according to mythology, can use leaves to shape-shift and cause chaos. According to Shigeru Miyamoto in the Super Mario Bros. 3 entry of the 25th Anniversary Super Mario History Booklet, he was aware that most players outside Japan would be overall confused with the Tanooki Suit and the transformation, but he left it in anyways because it was cool and he was too excited to remove it.
